International Baccalaureate ® (2.-4. Kl.)

At our school we also wish to cater to highly motivated and talented students, who are internationally-minded and who have a passion for learning. This is why we feel the IB Diploma Programme © best fulfills this goal.

The IB Diploma Programme ® and the Gymnasium

All our IB classes are fully integrated into the 4-year Gymnasium model.

In the first 1.5 years of the Gymnasium certain subjects (e.g. Biology, Mathematics, History) will be partially taught in English so that students can get used to a different language of instruction. The Diploma Programme itself will take place during the last 2 years of schooling.

Students in the IB class will also complete the Swiss state Matura programme. As students will be taking two different courses (the IB and the Swiss Matura), there will be a considerable amount of extra work involved. This is why the IB class is especially suitable for highly motivated and academically gifted students.

The IB class will be a GBplus class. This gives us the opportunity to work closely with the IB students in order for us to identify any problems which might arise and deal with them hands-on.

Subjects Offered

Due to time constraints, students cannot choose which subjects they will have in the IB Diploma Programme. As we have many major subjects (=Schwerpunktfächer, SPF) at our school, we have designed the Diploma Programme subjects to take the interests of the different students into account. The IB subjects we offer are:

1. German (Language A, HL)
2. English (Language B, HL)
3. French (Language B, HL)
4. Biology* (SL)
5. Maths* (SL)
6. History* (SL)
7.Theory of Knowledge*

* classes taught in English.

The students will also take a further subject called Creativity, Action, Service (CAS), and write an Extended Essay in English.

The Road to the IB Diploma Programme ®

Students who are interested in registering for the IB Diploma Programme © can do so by indicating this on their application forms for the Gymnasium during the final year of secondary school (= grade 9).  As the IB class will be integrated into the GBplus model, we advise prospective students and their parents to inform themselves about this.

Our IB classes starts from the 1st class (= grade 10) onwards. The IB Diploma Programme officially commences at the beginning of the third year (= grade 11) and continues until the end of the 4th class (= grade 13).

Students will take their written IB Diploma Programme exams in April and May of the 4th class (= grade 13), just before taking the Swiss Matura exams.
